Cal's Own Restaurant
Bespoke Artwork Murals & Artistic Direction
Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

A project completed for Cal's Own Restaurant, Jesmond. The client required three large scale wall murals to add colour and theme to a modern, industrial style space. The murals would be separated and spread across one large exposed brick wall running along the dining area.
In response to the brief I worked closely with the client to achieve the right mix of colour tones to create an inviting space for customers and to create a theme for the space, incorporating Neapolitan Italian colours and maintaining the use of geometric shapes.
Client Testimonial - Kerry Kitchin, Cal's Own

‘Jack Nassau came on board towards the beginning of the project to work on two specific areas of the refurbishment.
1) Panels for the front bar  2) Pasted graphics for rendered sections of interior wall
For both these areas Jack created a bespoke geometric style design, working closely with myself to work out the exact look that I was looking for. We played around with a number of different designs and colour combinations, settling on designs that complemented each other perfectly.
For the front bar panels we opted for CNC routed MDF boards that were then primed and lacquered. Jack had shown me several examples of how it would look using different materials and processes before I settled on this. Being given hard physical examples really helped me to envision the final look.

The pasted graphics for the wall followed a similar process of Jack showing me different types of paper and color applications and having Jack there on the day helping to put these on the walls was a real bonus.
Jack also used the same geometric design/brand to create a set of plywood clipboards that really help tie it all in together. He is currently working on some business cards too.

Jack is meticulous. He pays the upmost attention to all aspects of the job, from the design of the artwork to the materials used and then finally the application. Jack is also not afraid to speak his mind when he’s concerned decisions might not work, offering his expertise and aesthetic judgement throughout.
Jack is an extremely commercially minded individual and has the ability to use his finely tuned skills to achieve a great deal in the creative market. His specialist knowledge of materials, processes and of course his artistic capabilities will I’m sure, all be conducive to a very successful career.’

Three separate designs were produced for each mural, with each one being different in composition and colour. The murals were produced through paper paste up each design consisting of three roles of paper lined up and pasted to create a continuous image.

Drying Time - The installation of two paste up wall murals upon irregular wall surfaces and renders. The designs instantly added colour and lightness to an otherwise plain backdrop, adding a theme to the entire space at an early stage of renovation.
